You asked for a string of pearls. The kit rule says I have to be able to name the real object — so here it is: punched paper tape. Player-piano roll, Jacquard card, teletype tape. I picked it over everything else for one reason: a punched hole is permanent. You cannot un-punch it. Numbers-only-go-up stops being a policy we promise and becomes a property of the material. And the tape runs through a lit gate, so a marked day is a point of light — the pearl, physically honest.
The obvious read of "string of pearls," and a hard no under the values constitution: tradition is a silent architect, never a surface. No religious form in the product, ever. Naming it here so nobody proposes it again in three months.
The GitHub square grid is a screen, not an object, so it fails the kit rule outright. Worse, it is a shame machine: the empty squares are the loudest thing on it. Blank tape carries no charge; an empty square does.
Closest to a literal string of beads, and it fails on physics: beads slide back. A resettable counter contradicts the one promise we actually make.
Fails the Future-Tense Test. A calendar makes a claim about days that have not happened. The tape ahead of the head is simply unrun stock — it says nothing.

Did you do it. This is the part every competitor has.
Did you have to decide? Punched when the day cost you something. This is the measure the literature actually uses, and nobody ships it.

Their business is retention, and this feature ends the session forever. The stamp is the moat.
Flick it and the roll keeps winding, slowing under friction. Tape has mass. A view that stops dead the instant you lift your finger reads as a list, not an object.
It never stops between frames. As it slows it registers into the nearest day and clicks, exactly like film in a gate. This also means you cannot ever be looking at half a day.
Past the first or last frame the paper gets heavy and springs back, rather than hitting a wall. The roll has ends and you can feel them coming.
One tick per sprocket hole crossing the head, with pitch and volume riding the tape speed — so winding fast whirrs and easing in clicks. Your ear knows how fast you are going before your eye does.
You wind the day you want under the head, then hold the punch through. There is resistance, a filling arc, then the shear — the hole snaps in oversize, the chad ejects, the whole case recoils. A tap is a decision you can make by accident; a press is one you commit to.
The punch head only reaches seven days back — that is the backfill window, enforced by the mechanism instead of a validation message. It will not reach unrun stock, which is the Future-Tense Test as a physical fact. And a punched hole cannot be un-punched, so the no-reset rule needs no code to defend it. When a rule is a property of the material, it cannot be argued with.
